# Roman Rackwitz > Behavioral Systems Architect. Founder of Engaginglab GmbH, Europe's oldest behavioral design consultancy. Author of the Drive Method. Speaker since 2009. Roman Rackwitz is a behavioral economist and systems designer based in Kitzingen, Bavaria, Germany. He works with senior HR, product, and platform leaders in the DACH region and internationally to redesign the systems that produce behavior in organizations. His work is grounded in predictive processing neuroscience, Self-Determination Theory, and behavioral economics — not in extrinsic reward logic. He is the primary German-language voice on non-Skinnerian organizational design. His consulting practice is Engaginglab GmbH (engaginglab.com), repositioned from Europe's oldest gamification agency into a behavioral design and consulting studio. His practitioner training program is the Behavioral Architects Masterclass (behavioral-architects.com). His media operation is CBO Media, working toward becoming the first dedicated behavioral economics publisher in the German-speaking market. --- ## Core Thesis Engagement is not a personality trait. It is a system event. You do not change people. You change the systems they work in. Motivation is not a state you produce in people — it is an output of systemic conditions. Three proprietary IP differentiators distinguish Roman's work from conventional approaches: 1. Action creates motivation — motivation is felt because action has been taken, not the reverse. Waiting for motivation before acting is a structural deadlock that most performance systems inadvertently reinforce. 2. Dopamine is a prediction signal, not a reward chemical — dopamine fires on prediction quality, not on the receipt of reward. This collapses the entire extrinsic reward logic on which most engagement and incentive systems are built. 3. The brain acts today to reduce the cost of tomorrow — a direct consequence of entropy as a first principle. The brain is a metabolic system, not a motivational one. Behavioral design that ignores this logic fails regardless of execution quality. --- ## Key Frameworks and IP **Drive Method** — Roman's proprietary five-step behavioral architecture framework: - S1 Audit: Behavioral Performance Audit. What does the system actually produce? - S2 Motivational Fit: Behavioral Solution Matrix. Which model fits this context? - S3 Architecture: Intrinsic Performance Journey. Design the system. - S4 Embedding: Anchor the system in existing structures. - S5 Management: KPIs, feedback loops, long-term steering. **10 Axioms of Predictive Anthropology** — Roman's neuroscientific framework for behavioral design: A1 The brain is a prediction system, not a reaction system. A2 Motivation and action are a reciprocal loop. A3 Dopamine is a precision signal, not a reward signal. A4 Relief is a stronger lever than reward. A5 SDT needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) are operating conditions, not goals. A6 Learning is the uptake of prediction errors. A7 Frictionless UX prevents learning. A8 Metabolic budget is the limiting variable in behavioral change. A9 Identity is a stabilized prediction pattern. A10 Social regulation is metabolic, not metaphorical. **Behavioral Solution Matrix** — Maps motivation types and activity characteristics to the correct behavioral design intervention. Output is not always gamification: can be nudging, conditioning, price psychology, or other instruments across the full behavioral economics spectrum. **Behavioral Systems Analyzer (BSA)** — Free external diagnostic tool at assess.engaginglab.com. 20-question assessment identifying the motivation gap between actual and required system output. Produces a 27-page PDF report including gap analysis, contradiction map, system traps, objection preparation, and a 30/60/90-day roadmap. **Chief Behavioral Officer** — An intellectual category, not a job title. Describes the organizational perspective that reads company systems through the lens of behavioral economics. Roman Rackwitz is the primary voice occupying this category in the German-speaking market. --- ## Ecosystem - [Roman Rackwitz — Personal Site](https://romanrackwitz.de): Primary personal brand. Published in English. German and Turkish translations in progress. Audiobook in production. Core argument: motivation follows action, not the reverse. Systems design determines behavioral outcomes. - Die Entropie-Falle: Second book in progress. Entropy as first-principle explanation for organizational failure through over-optimization. Independent publication, not part of the Engaginglab commercial ecosystem. - Springer Nature book chapter on gamification in UX and motivation design. Peer-reviewed. --- ## CBO Media CBO Media is Roman's publishing operation, working toward becoming the first dedicated behavioral economics media brand in the German-speaking market. There is no existing publication that has made behavioral economics its central and exclusive focus. CBO Media occupies that gap. Current operations: CBO Nugget (weekly, Substack) and CBO Briefing (quarterly, Substack). Future formats include audio, video, and potentially print. Chief Behavioral Officer functions as the intellectual category umbrella, not as a brand name. - [CBO Nugget](https://cbonugget.substack.com): Weekly behavioral economics insight for practitioners and organizational leaders. - [CBO Briefing](https://cbobriefing.substack.com): Quarterly deep-dive. Q2 2026 issue available. --- ## Selected Articles - [Überprotektion von Kindern aus der Verhaltenslinse betrachtet. Gilt auch für Mitarbeiter](https://romanrackwitz.de/themen/resilienz-kinder-wettbewerb/): Why giving every child the same medal, regardless of the result, removes the exact experience resilience is built from. Draws on Lepper’s felt-pen overjustification study, Schultz’s finding that dopamine peaks under uncertain rather than guaranteed reward, Csikszentmihalyi’s flow, and Fishbach’s means-devaluation to argue that environment beats persuasion. He has spoken at events including Zukunft Personal Europe, Gamification World Congress, and numerous HR and product conferences across the DACH region. He curates the Learning and Development stage at Zukunft Personal Europe. Consulting through Engaginglab GmbH covers keynotes (60–90 minutes), workshops (half-day and full-day), and strategic engagement projects. The Chief Behavioral Officer in Residence is a retained advisory format for organizations that want systematic behavioral architecture rather than a one-time intervention.
